What are the articles (A or An and The) in grammar with examples

We are learning in this chapter articles and the articles are A, AN and THE. They are in fact demonstrative adjectives but are studied separately due to their Paramount importance in English language. We have to know how to use Articles. This chapter is very important in Grammar as all.

So the determiners A OR AN and THE are known as articles. They come before nouns.

There are two articles definite and indefinite

Definite article is the since the is pointing out some particular person or thing. 

Rina saw the pilot; means, some particular pilot.

We use definite article before plural countable noun, singular countable noun and uncountable noun.

For instance the pen, the pens, the tea etc.

Indefinite articles a or an, it usually leaves indefinite the person or thing. 

Reena saw a doctor; means any doctor.

We use indefinite article before singular countable nouns.

For instance a watch, an umbrella, an enemy, an orange, a book etc.

Uses of definite article and indefinite article.

Definite article THE

  • When we indicate some particular person or thing for instance, 

  1. The boy of this school is very intelligent.

  • When  singular noun is used to indicate or represent a whole class.

  1. The lion is king of forest.
  2. The dog is a faithful animal.
  3. The cow is a holy animal.

Men and women can be used in a general science without either article.

But in present day a man and a woman or men and women are more usual.

A man is more powerful than a woman.

We use definite article before some proper names and they are…

  • Oceans and seas for example the Indian Ocean, The Pacific, the South Atlantic Ocean, The Black Sea etc.
  • Rivers the Ganga, the Yamuna, the , the Saraswati etc.
  • Canal the Suez canal
  • Deserts the Sahara desert
  • Group of islands the West Indies
  • Few names of countries the Republic the United Kingdom and the Netherlands etc.
  • Mountain ranges the Himalayas the Alps etc.

We use the before the names of certain books

 For example the Vedas, The Puranas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Bible etc.

Before names of unique things.

The moon, the sky, the sun, the earth, the ocean, the sea, the universe etc.

With the proper noun when it is qualified by an adjective for defining adjective clause.

The mrs. Verma whom you met last night is my aunt.

Before musical instruments

  1. He can play the piano.
  2. My favourite musical instrument is the flute.

With ordinals

  1. She is the first girl who win the Olympic.
  2. The first page of the last chapter.

With superlatives we use definite article.

  1. This is the best woman ever.
  2. What is the darkest side of your life?

We use definite article before an adjective when the noun is understood

  1. The rich have ego.
  2. The poor are always with us.

We use definite article as an adverb with comparatives.

  1. The more they get the more they want.

Indefinite articles (a or an)

When a word begins with a consonant then we used a before it.

A woman, A Hero, A history etc.

We use a when the word has a sound of yu

A university A European, A unit, A union, A Unicorn etc.

We use a in numerical sense of one

  1. You give me a rupee.
  2. Twelve inches make a foot.
  3. I have a apple.

When the word begins with a vowel a, e, i, o, u We use an.

An elephant, an ink, an employee, an umbrella etc.

When the words begin with silent h we use an

An hour, an honest person, an honorable woman etc.

We use indefinite article in a vague sense of a certain.

A Riya mehta (a certain person named Riya Mehta) is suspected by the police.

Hindi Translation

दो article होते है  निश्चित (Definite) और अनिश्चित (Indefinite)

निश्चित ARTICLE THE है क्योंकि THE किसी विशेष व्यक्ति या चीज़ की ओर इशारा कर रहा है।

हम बहुवचन गणनीय संज्ञा, एकवचन गणनीय संज्ञा और UNCOUNTABLE संज्ञा से पहले निश्चित ARTICLE THE का उपयोग करते हैं।

अनिश्चित Article A or AN होते है , जब कोई व्यक्ति या चीज़ हमे न पता हो या फिर निश्चित न हो।

हम एकवचन गणनीय संज्ञाओं से पहले अनिश्चित ARTICLE का उपयोग करते हैं।

निश्चित लेख THE

जब हम उदाहरण के लिए किसी विशेष व्यक्ति या चीज़ को इंगित करते हैं,

इस स्कूल का लड़का बहुत बुद्धिमान है। The boy of this school is very intelligent.

जब एक पूरी प्रजाति को इंगित करने या उसका प्रतिनिधित्व करने के लिए एकवचन संज्ञा का उपयोग किया जाता है।

  1. शेर जंगल का राजा है। The lion is king of forest.
  2. कुत्ता एक वफादार जानवर है। The dog is a faithful animal.
  3. गाय एक पवित्र जानवर है। The cow is a holy animal.

पुरुषों और महिलाओं को एक सामान्य विज्ञान में या तो ARTICLE के बिना उपयोग किया जा सकता है।
लेकिन वर्तमान समय में a man and a woman or men and women ज्यादा इस्तेमाल होता है।

  1. A man is more powerful than a woman.

हम कुछ उचित नामों से पहले निश्चित ARTICLE 'THE' का उपयोग करते हैं और वे…

Mrs वर्मा जिनसे आप कल रात मिले थे, वे मेरी चाची हैं। The Mrs. Verma whom you met last night is my aunt.

संगीत वाद्ययंत्र से पहले

  1. He can play the piano.

अध्यादेशों के साथ

अतिशयोक्ति (SUPERLATIVES) के साथ हम निश्चित ARTICLE का उपयोग करते हैं।

  1. This is the best woman ever.
  2. What is the darkest side of your life?

जब हम संज्ञा को समझते हैं, तो हम विशेषण से पहले निश्चित ARTICLE का उपयोग करते हैं

  1. The rich have ego.
  2. The poor are always with us.

हम निश्चित लेख का उपयोग तुलनात्मक क्रिया विशेषण के रूप में करते हैं।

  1. The more they get the more they want.

अनिश्चित ARTICLE A or AN 

जब एक शब्द एक व्यंजन के साथ शुरू होता है तो हम पहले A का उपयोग करते थे।

A woman, A Hero, A history etc.

हम A का उपयोग करते हैं जब शब्द में यू की ध्वनि होती है

A university A European, A unit, A union, A Unicorn etc.

हम A  के संख्यात्मक अर्थों में उपयोग करते हैं

  1. You give me a rupee.

जब शब्द एक स्वर से शुरू होता (A, E, I, O, U) हम AN का उपयोग करते हैं।

जब शब्द मौन H से शुरू होते हैं तो हम AN का उपयोग करते हैं

An hour, an honest person, an honorable woman etc.

हम निश्चित के अस्पष्ट अर्थ में अनिश्चित ARTICLE A OR AN का उपयोग करते हैं।

Adjectives We are going to discuss Adjectives. Adjectives are those words which describe the nouns. There have Attributive and Predicative Adjectives which we will discuss  below. We will learn in this chapter that how to use ADJECTIVES and where we put ADJECTIVES.
